Questions and answers.

Phones, tags, the safety log and the price, then questions by kind of place.

The basics

What is Tagits?

Tagits sells pre-printed NFC and QR tags for holiday lets, lodges and glamping sites in the UK: a guest taps the tag on an object and the page for that object opens with no app, and the same tags give the host a fire-safety check log.

Do guests need an app?

No. A tag holds only a web address, so the phone opens it in its own browser. iPhones from the XS (2018) onwards and Android phones with NFC switched on read a tag when held to it. Any other phone scans the QR code printed on the same tag. There’s nothing to install and nothing to sign in to.

How is a tag different from a digital guidebook?

A guidebook is one document the guest has to find, open and search. A tag is fixed to the thing they are stuck on and opens the page for that thing alone: the hot tub tag opens the hot tub page. If you already have a guidebook you like, keep it.

Tags and phones

How it works

Which phones can read a Tagits tag?

iPhones from the XS (2018) onwards read the NFC chip when held to the tag, and so do Android phones with NFC switched on. Every other phone with a camera scans the QR code printed on the tag. Both open the same page in the phone’s browser.

Do the tags work on metal?

An ordinary NFC tag doesn’t, because metal blocks the signal. The hot tub panel, the boiler, the fridge and the fire extinguisher get tags made to work on metal. The QR code on a tag works on any surface.

Can a guest change or copy a tag?

No. Each tag is locked when it is made, so a phone can’t rewrite it. The tag holds only a web address with a random code. The page it opens is edited from your account and nowhere else.

What happens if I move a tag or lose one?

A tag moved to another object is relabelled in your account and its page changes with it. Each unit gets two free replacements a year for lost or damaged tags: ask from the tag’s page, tap the new one when it comes, and the page moves across. After that a replacement is £2.50 plus £1.50 postage.

What does Tagits record about my guests?

Each time a tag is opened, Tagits records which tag and when, so you can see which tags guests use most. It doesn’t ask who the guest is, and guests never sign in.

The safety log

The safety log

How often should smoke alarms be tested in a holiday let?

In England, the government’s fire safety guide for small paying-guest accommodation says smoke and heat alarms should be tested monthly, and at each change of occupancy in self-catering premises where no owner or staff are present. The Welsh Government’s guide for Wales asks for the same and names carbon monoxide alarms too. In both, fire extinguishers are serviced once a year by a competent contractor.

Can the fire safety record be kept electronically?

The England and Wales guides both say a record of testing and maintenance should be kept, as a log book or held electronically. Tagits holds it electronically, and prints it when you need paper.

Can my cleaner record the checks?

Yes. You invite each cleaner to the property and they sign in on their own phone. Every check is saved with the name of the person who made it, the date and the time.

Do I need to test the hot tub water in a holiday let?

HSE’s guidance HSG282 covers hot tubs used as part of a business, including holiday lets. For a domestic-type hot tub it gives typical frequencies of checking pH and disinfectant at least twice a day, depending on the risk assessment and use, and of draining, cleaning and refilling between each group of guests or at least weekly. It says the records should show who did the work and when. Tagits keeps that record when you tap the hot tub’s tag.

Does Tagits do my fire risk assessment?

No. Tagits keeps the record of your checks. It doesn’t carry them out, and a record isn’t a fire risk assessment. The assessment, the alarms and the yearly servicing stay with whoever runs the property.

Price

Pricing

How much does Tagits cost?

£99 for the first year for one property, with up to fifteen tags posted to you. From the second year it is £49 a year or £4.99 a month. Each further unit on the same site is £19 a year.

Is there a free trial?

Yes. You can set up one object free, with a QR sign you print yourself, and no card is needed. The posted tags and the safety log come with the £99 first year.

Do I pay per tag?

No. The price is per property and covers up to fifteen tags. More than that are £2.50 each, and each unit gets two free replacements a year for lost or damaged tags.

Can I cancel?

Yes, at any time, from Card, invoices and cancelling in your dashboard. Cancel within 14 days of paying and we refund the £99 in full. After that, cancelling stops the next renewal and Tagits keeps working until the end of the year you paid for. A monthly plan stops at the end of that month.

Holiday cottages

Do I need to be at the cottage to set up the tags?

No. A tag works wherever it is, so you can tap each one when the parcel arrives, say what it will go on and write its page. Stick them on at your next visit, or send them to whoever cleans the cottage.

What happens when I replace an appliance?

Edit its page from your phone. The tag stays where it is and opens the new page from the next tap. If the new one is somewhere else, move the tag and rename it in your account.

Short-term lets

Does Tagits connect to Airbnb?

No. Tagits isn’t connected to Airbnb or any booking site. The tags sit on the things in your property, and guests open them by tapping or with the phone’s camera, with no app and no sign-in.

Can I keep the key safe code off the page?

Yes. Put a PIN on the key safe tag and the code shows only once the PIN is typed. Send the PIN with the booking. Anyone without it sees the rest of the page and a way to tell you something is wrong.

Holiday parks

Can park staff record the hot tub water tests?

Yes. Invite them to the lodges they look after. When they tap a hot tub tag they record the pH, the disinfectant, the clarity and whether it was refilled, and each test is saved with their name and the time. Tagits keeps the record; it doesn’t say whether a hot tub is safe.

How much is Tagits for a holiday park?

The first lodge is £99 for the first year with its tags, then £49 a year. Each further lodge or caravan on the same park is £19 a year, plus that unit’s tags at £2.50 each.

Glamping sites

How much is Tagits for a glamping site with several units?

The first unit is £99 for the first year, with its tags, then £49 a year. Each further unit on the same site is £19 a year, plus that unit’s tags at £2.50 each. From the second year a ten-unit site pays £220 a year.

Does each unit need its own account?

No. One account covers the whole site. Each unit has its own tags, its own pages and its own safety log, and you invite each cleaner to the units they look after.

B&Bs and guest houses

Tagits for B&Bs

Does Tagits work in a B&B where I live on site?

Yes. Guests tap the tags in their rooms for the Wi-Fi, the TV or breakfast times, and the alarm tags hold the record of your monthly tests. You record those yourself, signed in on your phone.

How many tags does a guest house need?

Up to fifteen come with the first year. Count the things guests ask about in each room, then add the alarms and extinguishers. If that comes to more than fifteen, add the rest to the same order at £2.50 each.

Letting agents

Can one cleaner record checks across several properties?

Yes. Invite them to each property they look after. They sign in on their own phone and see every one, with the day’s round for each.

Can we send an owner the safety log?

Yes. Each property’s log prints, or saves as a PDF from the browser, with every check’s date, time and result and the name of the person who made it.

Then £49 a year, or £4.99 a month, for each property. To see it working first, set up one object free with a QR sign you print yourself.
